Poking Dead things With Sticks

The Spawn of Yog-Sothoth is nothing to sneeze at...
Updates/recaps

Hearing the sounds of destruction and a cry of Yog-Sothoth as the last Keeper fell the party realized things were about to get a lot more dangerous and immediately sprang into action looking for a way out other than the way they had come in. None were located so they began to prep for facing what was coming their way.

Aegeth lit a torch and prepped a spell from a scroll as Jik dropped the water level to a depth of 2 feet and started passing around party favors, Usas readied lightning bolt, Dolgin pushed the corpse of a violet fungus off the edge of the ledge he was perched on and then used it to lessen the drop for him to get down to the bottom of the pit while Niri eyed the remaining fungus that seemed to be interested in the new lack of water between them and the tasty morsels that had managed their way into their lair.

Then it came, on a wave of black ichor and undulating tentacles. It managed to get as far as the wall, climbing as easily as a spider until it was hit with the full force of the party….and a jar of Dust of Sneezing and Choking.

It was brilliant and brutal.

Clever murderhobos.

With the fall of the Spawn the rain has stopped, the sun is shining and the crows are crying out and taking wing. The City of Carrion Hill is safe, for now.

YOG-SOTHOTH!
Updates/recaps

Character blurb submitted by Nirinara’s player

She curiously prowled the market, her eyes trying to take in as much as possible as it was her first chance to do so since she had arrived in town. The weather was a bit depressive, but she had withstood quite a bit more than poor weather recently, so she hardly paid it any mind.
From stall to stall she moved, not staying too long as she browsed. She was bound to have a day or so yet to decide if she wanted to buy anything, or so she figured.
She lingered at a stall that seemed to carry some alchemy supplies, checking if there was anything she thought Jik might like. As she looked around she caught sight of a set of tools that seemed a bit unlike what she had seen in Jik’s lab. Intrigued, she took a closer look and the shopkeep spoke up about the kit in question:
“I’ll admit I aquired that particular set of tools more out of curiousity than an interest in applying their use to my trade. Perhaps they might better suit you, or someone you know better than I.”
She found herself a bit torn. She had certainly made impulsive purchases before, but there was a good chance these items would just take up space in the end.
The shopkeep seemed to sense a sale slipping from him and pulled book out from under the counter, merely titled: Thundering steel.
“This might be of some use. In fact, I’ll throw in this book at the cost I paid for it alongside the tools. It could go for quite a bit on its own otherwise. Here, have a look or two inside”
She hesitantly took the book and paged through it. The illistrations, no, schematics within were quite impressive and kindled a sense of wonder within her. She gave a toothy grin as she closed the book and put it upon the toolkit. “Fine, let’s talk about how much you want then…”

With the opening of the market, after much effort of the city workers to clean up the damages in more ways than one, the group was able to sell unwanted items and make some needed purchases.

The next Keeper the party went to investigate was Keeper Myre, who was in charge of the Middenstone factory. He was rumored to have been involved in acts of necromancy but as of yet there was no solid leads to prove it was anything more than stories, of course the party managed to find definitive proof, as well as taking down Myre in the process.

This left Keeper Hyve being the last bit of the puzzle, keeping him alive was the plan but it seems the plan changed after dealing with him in a pool of fungus laden dank water. The party sent him off to Pharasma’s judgement only to hear a commotion above that seems to be getting closer. Although they looked for an alternative escape route there seems to be none other than the slimy water slide they used to get down to the underground pond they are currently occupying.

Not a great place to have a battle. This could be very bad.

Updates/recaps

After liberating Ploog, the partially lobotomized would be guard, Dolgin led the way down the southern hall, opening two barred doors. The second door opened into a large cavern with a lake in the center that was adorned with fungus, unfortunately there was also a danger within, an amorphous outsider that set upon him as soon as possible.

Jik did what he could to try and protect Niri as she dug in her satchel for something useful, Usas set a flaming sphere echoed in spirit by Aegeth who rained a hail of flaming arrows over the heads of her companions, striking the creature multiple times, all the while it launched attacks on Dolgin with tiny sharp claws it conjured to being in its mass while Dolgin sliced his axe through it repeatedly, watching it reform around the cuts as it advanced. Finally it stilled its attacks, the power of the group having laid it to rest at their feet.

Niri, having pulled her vial out as it fell took the time to douse it with the chilling alchemical substance anyway. She got the last word in that battle.

Further exploration of the asylum lower level showed a few patients still locked up along with a good many empty cells. The surgery room, where Jik believes they have been performing the lobotomies that Ploog suffered, as well as the rest of the orderlies employeed by Crove, was also uncovered. Ploog refused to follow into that room, for obvious reasons.

Other than a few more incriminating books, papers and freed patients there has been little else of note located. Having defeated Crove who was running the asylum there is a growing need to report the findings and to get someone else to run the hospital for the remaining patients, who knows the last time they were fed?

((Dates are going to be a little wonky from old posts, we have a set calendar in Fantasy Grounds that is being utilized now that is going to keep track slightly differently. Month and days are accurate, day of week and moon cycle may be questionable and not match up. Pretend its always been like this. It’s MAGIC!))

She painted quickly, the brush dancing across the canvas time and time and time again. Always the same face. A memory stolen from her.

She painted him as he was, in life. Not the last vision she had of him, a handful of bitter ashes returned to a grave he had strayed from.

She was never able to tell him how she felt, it wouldn’t have been welcomed by her family, to be close to a human. She was destined to carry on her grandmothers legacy, no half breed spawn would ever be welcomed in Kyonin. She would have brought shame to her family name.

She reveled in the freedom death afforded her. A corpse can shame no one, it is a thing to be mourned…..or feared.

Comidus caught up with the party just in time to convince the orderlies the party were the ones that Waldur Crove was expecting to visit the asylum. They directed them to the lower level and kept clear of their progress for the rest of the evening.

The stairs sadly showed more mistreatment of the patients by the staff, they were chained by the foot top and bottom of the stairwells, in addition after managing to distract and or horrify the criminally insane and make their way down to the dungeon level they found another four with a good deal more maneuverability wielding broken bits of chair and pacing in an area of the hall that had been laid out with some sort of magical effect.

The other end of the hall proved just as unpleasant, a mad derro was carving up patients in some macabre experiment, the party managed to take him down as well as the patients he set against them, but not before one of them attempted to carve off one of Dolgin’s nipples.

Comidus tried to calm the crew in the magic circle, but Usas took things into her own very deadly hands, blasting the area with a ball of flame that killed all but one, calmly asking the others to remove the straggler in the aftermath.

The commotion drew Crove and his eidolon, sending them in to confront the group and recoup the loss of the patients they had intended to keep there for some unknown purpose. Most of the group was captured in a swath of tentacles that erupted from the floor, Jik’s Lady of Graves gifted him with the power to dispel it freeing the party long enough to send Crove to the afterlife.

Incriminating books, notes and witnesses were gathered, including what may be the patient that Seran warned them of. Now to just live long enough to present it and see where else these scattered pieces fit.

“Just do what you can.” Father Kazar whispered before following the retreating form of Mother Raduva down the hall where the rest of the corpses from the day before awaited their attention. So many pieces, restoring them was time consuming.

As the door closed behind them Lynnica circled the cold stone slabs before starting to strip the bodies and clean them off, sighing to herself at the amount of damage done to them.

“Well, you are both in terrible shape. If I bring people here to see you now you would likely cause more panic than is already running rampant. That isn’t an appealing option.

My choices seem to be 1.Cast restore and gentle repose, wait for someone to miss you and come forward, if there is anyone 2.Cast speak with dead, where if you are less than honest you can lie to me, or 3. Use blood biography find out who you really are and get you prepped for your final rest in record time."

Having made up her mind she began prepping her chosen spells, she would deal with Teadoma’s ire later.

Having retrieved the two cultist corpses, the party left them at the Ossuary Church, along with the burden of identification. They decided to follow up the lead with Crove at the Asylum, but upon arriving found the doors of the large windowless building open, with three patients in straight jackets screaming and writing in the front room. Although helpless and obviously insane Jushyn, Dolgin, Usas and Nasta decided to attack them anyway.

After a few rounds of beating on the patients, 4 staff members showed up, demanding the party to drop their weapons and notified the party they were trespassing. Jushyn kept his hand on his sword, with the injured and spell trapped patients shrieking behind him.

After the party beat the orderlies nearly to death, Jik spared them with his holy gifts.

In the darkness of his safe house Seran carefully handles the scroll case, running through the past 24 hours events and trying to decide what information was the most valuable.

His anger at the loss of those that were entrusted to his care suddenly seizing him he needs to take a moment to regain his composure before unfurling the scroll. He reminds himself silently that they knew the dangers of living so close to the surface. Nothing could be done to change their fate now, at least they died free.

As the last words of the casting leave his lips he gives a short pause before running off what little information he can convey within the constraints of the spell.

“Effigy is headed to Illmarsh. Second cult is an active threat but may be neutralized by possible Society members. I watch and wait, as always.”

He stands in the dark listening to the distant sound of thunder above awaiting Evon’s reply.

After Aegeth made a deal with Seran, Jik obtained healing for Jushyn’s shattered mind and destroyed the haunt that had caused it.

Niri was again allowed to open the locking mechanism on the book. With the assistance of a spell and heavy use of the linguistics skill Jik and Usas were able to decipher a good deal of its contents.

In addition to finding out the cultists seem to have been working on summoning an entity from the Dark Tapestry to commune with it was signed by each of the “Keepers”
Keeper Baskerwhel
Keeper Crove
Keeper Hyve
Keeper Marshan
Keeper Myre

The party quickly made the connection of old man Marshan and Keeper Marshan and, upon reporting to Mayor Heggry, were able to gather that there is a Waldur Crove that runs the local Asylum, the rest of the names are still a mystery.

After some deliberations and a very amusing group vote, they decided to delve back into the catacombs to retrieve the corpses they left behind. If they can find out who they are in relation to the names, the group will then then carry on to Crove’s Asylum to question the man himself about his involvement.

Updates/recaps

Exploration of the tunnels directly under “Old Man Marshan’s” house have proved a bit more dangerous than our adventurers first thought, even with the shredded corpses strewn about.

After Usas identified the spell holding the elven male hostage and successfully dispelled the effect he offered some information, for a price, and teleported away before the dwarf waved his axe in the fellows face one too many times.

The information panned out, leaving the group owing the informant another 400 gold, when they located the main altar deep under the city. The bodies of two cultists lay torn and twisted and as Jik tried to get a better look a ghoul got the jump on him, taking him down within seconds. The others did their best to assist but it was divine intervention that kept the little priest from slipping off to his Lady’s judgement. Niri was able to assist after the foul creature was dispatched by way of a healing wand.

Among the loot laying about was a small, odd book with a clever little closure that looked like insect limbs clinging tightly to a odd gem in the center. Niri was able to open it unleashing a wave of maddening whispers in the area, unfortunately shattering both her and Jushyn’s minds . The group had to deal with an insane ranger and rogue before they could continue on, using Nightstorm to take down his master and pin him with his large bulk and Comidus managed to tie up Nirinara while she was babbling and having a moment of calm. Everyone decided to take a break to get the two afflicted to a healer strong enough to remove the taint, with the re-closed book safely tucked into Dolgin’s haversack.

Upon returning to the streets of Carrion Hill everyone was made aware that although the Crows had been trying to keep the circumstances quiet the news spread fast and people were trying to leave the city in a rather unorganized panic. The Crows were barely keeping things under control in respect to people crowding the carriage houses and attempts at riots and looting.

Upon reaching the Ossuary Temple in the Crown of Carrion Hill most of the clergy were handling the remains from the attacks that day in preparation for burial. One senior cleric by the name of Lynnica Istran was able to cure Nirinara, but sadly was not strong enough for a second casting of the needed spell. She promised to assist in the morning when she was again gifted with Pharasma’s blessings and after some time talking back and forth with Jik accepted an offer to come speak of what was going on at the Inn where the group was staying, carrying on the conversation up into his room for most of the evening.

After dinner the elven male came to collect his payment, Aegeth went to meet with him and they ended up going back and forth other bits of intel. Aegeth was able to get some of the information she was looking for in coming this way,for a price to be paid now and another to be paid and named later. As part of this arrangement the elf, who goes by the name Seran, was willing to use Share Memory, to show her exactly what the item she is seeking looks like and its true nature.

Usas had cast Message on Aegeth before she went in and had her familiar, Nasta, sitting by the door so most of Aegeth’s half of the verbal communication was able to be relayed to the rest of the party.

The group still needs to report back to the Mayor, get Jushyn (who is currently tied ass up on the bed in his room with the wolves and Comidus watching over him) healed and find out exactly what is going on here and what the Whispering Way had to do with it all.

Good luck.

A Sickening development.
Updates/recaps

After accepting an offer to look into the destruction of the Slipper Market in the Tangles district of Carrion Hill the group spoke with guards, a drug addled witness and examined the scene. The three whole bodies they were able to look at were twisted and broken, one of the Lord Garus’s men in fact was wrung physically much like a dish rag, metal armor, weapons and all.

The floor of the building that was known as “Old Man Marshan’s” house was covered in a sickening black tar like substance. A smell like nothing anyone in the party has ever witnessed before. The ruined furniture was littered with bits of many bodies, all strangely bloodless but still from a fresh kill. The house had a staircase, recently cleared of old debris, that headed down into the catacombs under the city itself. It appeared the creature that ultimately destroyed the building came up from there but did not return the way it came.

The stairs quickly changed to an older design of Taldan design, leading to an old tomb for followers of Aroden. The tomb led on to another staircase leading deeper down as well as to another room that was oddly blocked off by rubble, after clearing it the group found a campsite area that people had been sleeping along with a doorway that was barricaded from the back, after a lot of work they managed to push it open to find a elf standing perfectly motionless and three dark creepers who were quickly overpowered. The elf, although unmoved during the whole situation, unblinking, unbreathing, a slight look of surprise on his face while his hands are held up in front as if reading an invisible book was of course almost targeted by the barbarian.
